Dorothy "Dottie" Polakas Obituary

Dorothy " Dottie " passed away courageously at home on December 19, in Johnson City, NY. Dorothy was loved and admired by all who were given the blessing of knowing her. She was a child of immigrants from Slovakia, and a child of the great depression, one of five children raised in the Slovak First Ward when it was truly grand. She attended St. Cyril's and was a member of the Binghamton Central class of '46. A single parent long before it was fashionable, she raised two boys to manhood, providing them with and teaching them about love, faith, kindness, loyalty, determination, humility, and charity. Her lifelong motto was " Love is Sacrifice ".  She was completely selfless; a compassionate warrior, devoted to " Gentle Jesus " and her dear St. Anthony. Dorothy retired after thirty-three years from New York Telephone, receiving several awards - including an attendance award- despite working years of split-shifts, care-taking of her aging mother, and raising children alone. She never complained, rather, she often sought to lighten the load of others. She was quick to laugh, and share joy. Dottie had many pets, most of which were rescues. Her love for the beauty of God's creation and all of God's creatures was profound.   After retirement, she travelled with her sons, including trips to the Vatican, Hawaii, Bermuda, The Bahamas, Florida, and the coasts. She sang in several choirs, and participated in the sad closing of several local churches.  She is survived by sons Gary and Robert. Also by a sister-in-law, Patricia Pelshaw, and several beloved nieces: Carol, Jeannie, Mary Beth, Suzy who were like daughters to her, Margaret Mary, and two nephews, Marty and Tommy Joe.  She was predeceased by her parents, Andrew & Lena Pelshaw; sisters Florence (SeJan ) & Marie (Richards-Zemek), and Margaret " Peggy " (Mitsuti), and her beloved brother, Andrew.  Her passing brings together in paradise the entire magnificent Pelshaw family of Berlin Street.  In fulfillment of her desire to be remembered and celebrated as in life, services will be private.  Those who desire to express their genuine love for her are encouraged to donate to their local ASPCA in her memory, or make a simple effort to lift the burden - however briefly - of someone suffering, or in need, on her behalf.  Dorothy - From the Greek: Gift Of God....
