Shirley (Hayes) Soltis

Shirley Soltis, 72, of Johnson City, was called home to her Lord on Saturday October 6, 2018 after more than a four and a half year battle against cancer.  Her life will always serve as a true testament to courage, love, and faith for those of us blessed enough to have known her.  Shirley was predeceased by her husband HM3 Lawrence Everett Johnson (KIA in Vietnam), her second husband Frank Soltis, longtime best friend, Judy Herko, and her parents, Ethel C. and Dewitt H. Hayes. She is survived by her children, Corinna Johnson (Jim Lane), Dan (Krista) Soltis, and her precious grandchildren Alexis and Tyler Soltis who lovingly knew her as “Grandmama”.  She is also survived by many siblings and their spouses: Emalie Tipton, Jeanne Cameron, Rose (Jim) Barton, Dan (Sue) Hayes, Charlene Boyea, Don (Beth) Hayes, Duane (Margaret) Hayes, and Evie Flynn.  Many treasured nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.  Also, survived by cherished friends Margaret (Ray) Avery and Mildred Fitch as well as an extensive church family and former coworkers including Marie Lukasik and her Johnson City retirees breakfast group.  Shirley retired from the Johnson City school District after 20 years of service, was a former employee of Philadelphia Sales, an active member of the Valleyview Alliance Church and faith community, and a dedicated resident of the Village of Johnson City. Funeral services will be held at the J.F. Rice Funeral Home, Inc., 150 Main St., Johnson City, Wednesday October 10, 2018 at 11am with burial in Vestal Hills Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10am until the time of service.  It was Shirley’s wish to thank all the staff at Wilson hospital North Wing three for their love and support throughout her stay.  In lieu of flowers, Shirley requested that any contributions in her memory be directed to The Bridge Community Center 143 Baldwin Street, Johnson City, NY 13790.
