Mathilda Winters Obituary

Binghamton - Mathilda "Tillie" Bridget (Carlson) Winters has been reunited with the love of her life, her husband, William E. Winters after 58 years apart. She passed away peacefully in her home on January 27, 2021. She was 90 years old.

Tillie was a wonderful, kind and caring woman who loved her family deeply. She was a devoted mother to her five children, Mary Lou (Tony) Pompette, Bill (Connie) Winters, Jim Winters, Maureen (Steve) Ruddy and Dan Winters. An amazing Grammy to her granddaughters and grandsons Maureen (Rich) Biddle, Will (Elia) Winters, Elizabeth Ruddy, Kate Winters, Danielle (Nate) Byrne and Marissa Ruddy. Her true joys in life were her great granddaughters Gracie, Emilia, Sophia and Madelyn who lovingly called her GiGi.

Tillie is predeceased by her mother Nora, father John and stepmother Martha Carlson and sisters Virginia D'Angelo and Billie Moore. Tillie married her soulmate Bill when she was 21 years old and remained devoted to him despite his untimely death at the age 34. She worked at IBM until her retirement.

She loved spending time and taking trips with her family. She started running in her 40s and then became an avid walker in her late 50s. She loved to write letters to the editor. Her favorite song was "Danny Boy". She could often be found playing an assortment of card and board games with her children and grandchildren, pinochle was her favorite. Her favorite show in her later years was NCIS. Grammy could always be counted on for making the best chocolate chip cookies. She was a remarkable woman whose generosity was unsurpassed and she will be profoundly missed.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of Tillie's doctors and caregivers especially Danielle, Sita, and Colleen and her loving sons Dan and Jim.

Due to pandemic the family will host a private gathering with a Catholic mass to be scheduled in the future. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. James church in her memory.
