Obituary

Michael “Mike” Spencer, 86, passed away on April 25, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born in 1936 and lived in the Johnson City area where he raised his family. He was predeceased by his son, Anthony, parents, John and Louise (Mouillesseaux), siblings, John, Sidney, George and Amy and mother-in-law, Giovanine (Zevan) and sister-in-law, Jamey. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rosalie (Zevan), daughters, Suzanne, Wayland, MA, Victoria and Leanne and son, Steven (Karen), all of Binghamton, NY, daughter-in-law, Rocio, Bedford, NH, as well as seven grandchildren:  Nicholas (Erin), Angela, Jordan, Nathan, Haley, Valentina and Gabriela and two great-grandchildren, Charlie Rose and Bennett, sister-in-laws, Joan, Angela and Ann and several nieces and nephews.

Faith, family and service to others were important to Mike. He was a lifelong member of St. James Church and served as a Captain in the Army National Guard. As a member of St. James, he served in many ministries. He sang in the choir, was a lector, Parish Council member and Trustee. He also led the weekly Bingo program and oversaw the renovation of Msgr. Owens Hall where he was also part of the crew. He loved his family and supported them. He worked for McIntosh Laboratory, Inc., Binghamton, NY, which he retired from after 40 years. Following a year of retirement, he went back to work as a member of the Parish staff at St. James where he worked for many years. His passion was for his family to experience all the many gifts that life could offer such as:  a good Catholic education, friends and community, travels (especially to Cape Cod) and of course great music which was a constant in our home. It was music that was instrumental in bringing Mike and Rosalie together specifically through a borrowed Dave Brubeck Quartet album. From that day forward, his family’s appreciation of music was born and will forever remain a part of their lives thanks to Mike’s love of music.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. James Church, 147 Main St. Johnson City, NY on Friday May 5, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. and it will also be live streamed at:  stjamesjc.org. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Michael’s name may be made to the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC), a fund for the benefit of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute using the link:  http://profile.pmc.org/SS0181or the National Braille Press using the link:  Donate to Literacy Champions (classy.org) or a charity of your choice.
