Vladimir Dekar Obituary

BROOME COUNTY - Walt (Vladimir) Dekar (96) a lifetime resident of Broome County, passed away peacefully April 30, 2021. While he wasn’t out fishing at the time, he was probably thinking about it! Walt is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, June Dekar; devoted children: Robert Dekar (FL), Kathy (Edward) Taylor (FL), Charles (Veronica Lee) Dekar (VT), Caryl (Wilbur) Moore (NC), and Greg (Jeanne) Seifert (OH); adoring grandchildren Lindsey (Brian) Kiely, Nicholas (Kirsty Nicolson) Dekar, Christopher (Racheal Holt-Taylor) Taylor, Mary Claire (Jay Kulesa) Dekar; Ian (Evelina) Seifert, Erin (Chris) Jones, Emily Seifert, Christian Moore; five sweet little great- grandchildren; brother-in-law: William Kerr; sisters-in-law: Agnes Dekar, Rue Brodbeck and Barbara Cecala; as well as many very special nieces and nephews and their children and families. Walt was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Coast Guard as a torpedo man 3/C on USCG Cutter Bibb and Fire Control man 3/C on USCG LST 791. For his service he was awarded the American Campaign, European African Middle East Campaign, World War II Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Occupation Service, and Philippian Liberation medals. He was a charter member of American Legion Post 1305 and volunteer driver for the County of Broome Veteran’s Services. After 38 years of service, Walt retired from his job as Purchasing Manager for the IBM Corporation. He also taught purchasing negotiations at IBM as well as at Broome Community College. Walt thoroughly enjoyed his 41 years of retirement with numerous family gatherings, travel with family and friends, and restoring antique cars. He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter, gardener and true family man. His preparedness against marauding snakes was legendary. “Vlad” as he was affectionately known, defined the term “The Greatest Generation” and while we all knew he wasn’t going to live forever, we thought so for a long, long time. His charmed life of almost, but not quite, killing himself in numerous accidents led us to believe he had a cat’s nine lives, and he used most of them. He was a wonderful person in all respects and will be greatly missed by his family and friends and all the remaining deer in the fields and fish in the waters For those that wish, the family requests remembrances be made in the form of contributions to The Travis Flanagan Recovery Fund. Travis is an incredible neighbor, friend, and family man and ‘caretaker’ of the hill that Walt loved so much. https://gofund.me/232ed4a2 A private memorial service will be held in the summer months.
